Valerian is a perennial plant that grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet, and has fragrant reddish to white flowers. It is usually thought of as a human herbal medication, having been used by humans for hundreds of years for a variety of reasons including: aiding sleep, treating restlessness, anxiety or tension.
It’s popularity with cats stems from a terpenoid chemical that the root contains. This is similar to chemicals found in catnip. As well as cats benefiting from its relaxing and calming properties, it has also been successful in treating stress related cystitis in cats.
