ZOOPHARMACOGNOSY - A BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE BASED ON OBSERVATIONAL RESEARCH
Zoopharmacognsy refers to the process by which animals self-medicate and naturally forage plants and their essential oils, algae, clay and other natural remedies. This practice allows an animal to use its innate ability to prevent disease. Zoopharmacognosy was coined by Dr.Eloy Rodriguez a biochemist and professor at Cornell University. The word is derived from the ancient greek zoo "animal", pharma "remedy", and cognosy "cognitive" (thinking).
Before animals became domesticated, they roamed free selecting plants, algae, clays, vitamins, minerals and herbs which would be beneficial to aid in recovery from illness and to maintain health.
Today's animals are not quite as lucky and are taken away from their natural habitat where the grasslands and herbs suited their constitution. On the one hand, many pastures have not retained their mineral balance, variety of grasses and herbs and on the other many owners over supplement which does not allow an animal the choice of selecting those plants they would forage in the wild in order to control their health. Modern diets for our animals are often restrictive and can lead to imbalances in the body resulting in both structural and emotional problems.
Iridology allows us to identify which areas of the body are out of balance long before symptoms present. As iridologists and zoopharmacognosy practionners, we have a unique insight into which products your animal is likely to select. Animals have an inherent ability to heal themselves, however are only able to do this if presented with a suitable selection of secondary compounds (natural medicines) found in essential oils, clays, vitamins, algae, minerals and herbs. By allowing them to behave as they would in the wild, owners are enhancing their animal’s environment allowing them to heal themselves and acting, therefore, on both a physical and mental level. Zoopharmacognosy practionners are facilitators of the natural countryside offering oils, algae, dried herbs and powders for self selection. A key aim of Naturally Animals is to provide a suitable range of products to meet this need.
During the Consultation
As the only practising Iridologists and Zoopharmacognosy practionners, we offer a unique insight into your animals individual needs. If required by the owner, we can start a consultation with an iridology assessment, which allows us to quickly focus on the main priorities for your animal. A range of appropriate secondary compounds will be offered to your animal allowing it to select those remedies needed to balance the body. Many essential oils and herbs can often resolve many different symptoms whilst a particular issue can be resolved by several different oils should the animal choose more than one remedy. Animals with almost identical symptoms can select completely different substances; every animal is different depending on their constitution, inherent weaknesses and preferences.
Subtle signs of the animal's response to the remedies are observed and it is important that whilst this process is taking place the animal has as few distractions as possible.
Many pet insurance companies now cover complimentary therapies for your animals; please check your policy for details.
In keeping with the law, a Zoopharmacognosy practitioner will always recommend that you inform your vet.
